Through a joint venture project with Creighton School District in Phoenix and the Greater Phoenix, Arizona
chapter of People to People International, 12 students and 4 district staff were able to experience Japan
on a very personal basis in May/June 2007. Mrs. Ruriko Nakajima, People to People International Board
of Directors and Ms. Margaret DuBois, President of the Greater Phoenix, Arizona Chapter are
coordinating this wonderful cultural exchange program.
Students will host and be hosted by the same partner as much as possible. Arizona
students and staff spent 2 days in Tokyo. There they met with members of the Urayasu
chapter and their president, Eiichi Otomo. Also assisting the group were people from the
town of Midori, who were interested in learning more about starting a new chapter of
People to People International in their area.
The group was thrilled to see Mt. Fujii as they drove to their home stays with the
Kikugawa chapter. Students attended school with their home stay partners, visited a
green tea farm and rice paddy. They also enjoyed time by the ocean exploring tide
pools and seeing a big Japanese fish market. An exciting ride on the famous bullet train
took the group to see the temples and palaces of the ancient capitol of Kyoto. They
also had fun shopping in the many gift shops and experiencing the cuisine of Japan.
The group was sad to say goodbye, but were pleased to know that the hosting partners
would visit them in Arizona in March of 2008.
